There is evidence which highlights the importance of building and maintaining strong relationships with family and friends. These can act as a cushion against mental ill health. Close social networks help to promote a sense of belonging and well-being. Feeling close to, and being valued by, other people is a fundamental human need and one that contributes to functioning well in the world. The idea of connecting with people seems key to promoting life satisfaction.
